“There is an ancient conversation going on between mosses and rocks, poetry to be sure. About light and shadow and the drift of continents. This is what has been called the ‘dialectic of moss on stone–an interface of immensity and minuteness, of past and present, softness and hardness, stillness and vibrancy, yin and yang.’ The material and the spiritual live together here.”
—Robin Wall Kimmerer, Gathering Moss, p. 5
What would it mean to think like and with moss? To notice the microscopic structures that make up the whole, to see the way it digs into the crevices and faces of rock? To treat moss as an aesthetic or a way of life? In this workshop, Dr. K. Frances Lieder will lead a discussion of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses, followed by a chance for you to build your very own moss-scape! No advance reading necessary (though we encourage you to pick up a copy of the book), and we will provide everything you need for your moss-scape, including an extra special pack of our store’s own crystals to contrast with your beautiful mosses, but feel free to bring anything you have gathered along the way.
